The road to autism recovery begins with diet. That is, making calculated omissions and additions to food choices is the first step to improving children’s health and well being.

Certain food substances (most notably gluten and casein) are known to be problematic, and should be avoided – and other foods rich in healing nutrients are beneficial when added to children’s diets. Attention to these factors is intended to balance biochemistry, affect systemic healing, and provide relief of autism symptoms. In simple terms, these are the underlying tenets of diets for autism.

There are many “autism diets” to choose from and deciding how to begin nutritional intervention can seem overwhelming. Ten years ago, it was a simpler choice-do diet! And, “do diet” meant do the Gluten-free Casein-free Diet (GFCF). Eliminating gluten (the protein in wheat) and casein (the protein in dairy) was the primary focus of diet for autism for many years, and provides many positive benefits. Since then, significant advances in biomedical nutrition research and mom-centric anecdotal data have resulted in broader dietary strategies for autism. Autism Gfcf Diet

Now, one has to decide which diet to do. This can inhibit even the most recovery focused parent from getting started. Parents hear “You need to do this diet,” or “my son improved on that diet.” Because each diet has its group of supporters, parents whose children did well with a particular diet aptly tout it. How can there be so many varied opinions? It’s because every person is different-each has unique biochemistry, genes, environment assaults, and eating preferences. A diet that helps one child, may not be the best for the other.

My clients are relieved to learn that I do not spout the dogma of any one diet. As a Nutrition Consultant, I practice nutrition intervention focused on improved systemic health and relief of physiological and neurological symptoms. Autism diets are food-based strategies employed toward this objective. I help parents choose the best initial diet for their child and then work to customize that diet to further to meet their specific needs. Autism Gfcf Diet

When a friend of mine who is a celiac asked me where to find gluten free bread, I just went to a pharmacist in Naples and found a whole range of gluten free foods. My friend who is British was amazed. The reason is that celiac disease is quite common in southern Italy and also in Ireland. She was in her late thirties at the time and had just been diagnosed as a celiac. We now know that many kids who have ADHD are celiacs and have to follow an ADHD gluten diet.

What does this mean in practical terms ? If your child is diagnosed as a celiac and also has ADHD, then he must follow a gluten free diet. If he does not, there is a risk of permanent damage to the intestine with the possibility of developing cancer (lymphona) in the intestine in adult life. It can also lead to osteoporosis, anemia and the gluten, which is nothing more than a protein, can cause an allergic reaction and the body just cannot cope with it. This is a similar reaction to that of an intolerance to other foods such as lactose. Most symptoms related to gluten intolerance are gastrointestinal in nature, not surprising as the small intestine is the first organ to be affected.

In the case of the gluten, the effects can be more serious in that it can prevent the body from absorbing some nutrients and vitamins. An intolerance to gluten has now been linked in several studies to hyperactivity in ADHD, depression and anxiety. In the ADHD gluten diet all baked products which have used whole wheat flours such as wheat, barley and rye are off limits. These grains give some elasticity in cooking which is why we use them so much in baking. This sort of texture is lacking in some of the gluten free flours and baking procedures have to be adjusted accordingly. I was surprised to learn that there are a wide range of these gluten free flours so the ADHD gluten diet can be quite varied. The grains which have no gluten are quinoa, oats, millet, buckwheat (don’t be put off by the name), cornflour, amaranth and rice.

The best diet of all whether it is gluten free or not is one based on fruit and vegetables some protein and some dairy products. This is probably the best diet all round but it is ideal for those on an ADHD gluten diet. As I said above, baking with the gluten free flours can be a challenge but now there are more and more eateries and food chains catering for celiacs. While a ADHD gluten diet will help in reducing some of the classic ADHD symptoms such as hyperactivity and lack of concentration, the best remedy in combination with gluten ADHD is an ADHD homeopathic remedy which has no side effects and no health risks at all.

Product Description
When Dr. Lucy Gibney learned her child had severe food allergies, she got down to some serious medical research in the kitchen. Inspired by her son and encouraged by her husband, she put aside her career as an emergency physician to create great tasting foods for people with modified diets. She started by taking her mother’s time tested recipes and substituted her own gluten free flour blend. Next she meticulously experimented until she baked great tasting cookies without milk, butter or eggs. Most importantly, she knew the only way to make products in a protected environment and prevent unwanted ingredients such as peanuts or tree nuts was to control the process from start to finish. She has put all of her efforts into creating a dedicated bakery where her vision is now a reality. Today, Lucy’s cookies stand as proof that no one ever has to be denied a good cookie. Every crispy, crunchy Lucy’s cookie is baked without wheat, gluten, milk, eggs, pean… More >>
